² The first thing, sometimes the only thing, that an Indian who is not very familiar with the science of music can tell you about a particular *Rāg* which is being performed is that it is a morning, or that it is an evening *Rāg*—though this perhaps does not prove more than that the *Rāgs* are as a matter of fact confined in their performance to the appropriate time of day.
