The process of simplification has already begun. The Carnatic system frankly ignores the niceties (examined in Chapter IV) of intonation. In northern India a number of songs are described as 'in a mixed *Rāg*' or 'not in a *Rāg*' and yet are accepted and enjoyed. The preponderance of common time (*Ādi*, *Tintāl*) and of 3/4 (*Rūpak*) over all the other kinds put together can hardly have been as great in the days when the system of thirty-five *Tāls* was invented. The 'new style' of drumming ignores the 'drum-words' and tends to simplify the elaboration of cross-rhythm.
