versions of Ex. 83 were from different singers. They are probably in seven-rhythm, but in the absence of any clear indication only what appeared to be the time values of the notes has been given. The A♮ sounded more piquant than the A♭; as the flattening is obviously only a case of *Musica ficta* it does not appear in the signature.
