This should be compared with Ex. 99. The change of key is most unusual, and does not appear to be recognized at all in the art-music. It is possible to suppose the tonic is the same throughout—E♭ in Ex. 93 and C in Ex. 99. But against this is the very definite close in C of Ex. 93, and the exact correspondence of the two sections of Ex. 99. They must stand, therefore, as rare instances of a change of tonic; in which case the mode also changes in Ex. 93 from Doric to Lydic,¹ but remains the same in Ex. 99.
