¹ The nomenclature of this scale has a long history behind it, much of which will be found in Mr. Clements's book. Some of the names are transferred from the Hindostani system, e. g. Kākali, Kaiśiki, Sādhāraṇa, Antara, where they had a precise meaning which they have here lost.
