“It is mentioned in the Rāga-Darpaṇa that out of these rāgas, he has shown the perfection of music in Sazgari, Bakharār Ushashaq, and Muwafiq. In the remaining rāgas he has made some alterations and given them new names: Qawl, Tarana, Khyal, Naqsh, Nigar, Baseat, Talana, Suhla—all these, as well, are ’Amīr Khusrau’s inventions. Some of these are specially his own inventions. The names of some others existed previously in Hindu music. ’Amīr made some modifications in them and changed their names.” (Shir-u’l-’Ajam, by Shibli, p. 135).
