There is a long standing tradition, still surviving in current musical practices, that after Vālmīki had composed his *Rāmāyaṇa*, it was set to music by Bharata himself¹ and sung by Lava and Kuśa, who were fortunate in finding as their auditor Rāma himself. We have no means of knowing the character of the melodies to which the *Rāmāyaṇa* was sung.
