Sometimes, individual musicians, princes, chiefs, kings and patrons of music, have recorded their names in melodies created by them, or varieties and innovations introduced by them. The earliest example is the name of the melody Bhāṭiyārī, (‘Bhartṛharikā’, according to the text of Saṅgīta-Sudhā [early 17th century]. It is traditionally derived from Bhartṛhari, the famous prince-poet, the author of the Śatakas, who is believed to have lived in the middle of the seventh century.
