Obviously the construction of these rails is borrowed from wooden prototypes; but it is not only in the constructional forms that they give indirect evidence of the ancient crafts of India, which are frequently referred to in the Râmâyana and Mahâbhârata. The whole technique of the sculpture is a curious rendering in stone of the craftsmanship of wood-carvers, metal-workers and painters, and, as nothing similar to it is to be found in the sculpture of other countries, it will be interesting to inquire how this peculiar style originated.
