A ruined temple at Khajurâho (Pl. XXVII) shows very clearly the usual method of constructing a ribbed sikhara when stone is the material. The core is made of rough coursed rubble, without mortar or cement, bound together at intervals by larger horizontal slabs of stone. The weight of the heavy amalaka which crowns the sikhara acts as a key-stone.
