To the east of this early group, occupying the centre of the “digit of the moon,”¹ comes the second one, including the vihâras numbered XIV to XVIII and the chaitya-house No. XIX, which embrace a period commencing about the second century A.D. and ending about the fifth. Vihâra XV can be definitely dated *circa* A.D. 185, and XVII and XVIII come within the reign of Vikramâditya of Magadha, an inscription showing that it was dedicated by the king of the Vâkâtakas, whose queen was a daughter of the great Gupta emperor.
