We may take it for granted that just as the types of houses represented in the sculptures of Bharhut and Sânchî resemble in many respects the domestic buildings of modern India, so the planning of Indian villages laid down in the Mânasâra, the Silpa-sâstra² of which Râm Râz has given too brief a summary in his valuable essay on the architecture of the Hindus, does not differ in essential points from that which was followed in the third century B.C.
