*Primâ facie*, it is wholly improbable that the philosophical speculations connected with the three positions of the sun in the heavens which are fundamental to all Indo-Aryan religious belief should have remained without concrete artistic symbols for so many centuries. The fact that the earliest have not hitherto been discovered is only an instance of how a false premiss may obscure the mental vision of experts; but when the fine work of the Indian master-builder in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has entirely escaped the notice of Anglo-Indians, it is natural to expect that they should often lose their way in more remote fields of observation.
