About 1/4 of the kilometre, north of Basava Kalyāṇa, on a natural eminence is located the ancient fort. Kalyāṇa (Fig. 43) was the capital of the later Chālukyas from the last quarter of 10th century A.D., almost upto the end of 13th century A.D. (i.e. 975-1290 A.D.). It played politically important role in the history of medieval Deccan.
