After the Arthasāstra of Kautilya, a noteworthy work on the treatise on the society of his country as a whole, man's relation with his kith and kin, his social behavior and the society, rights and duties, king and kingship, the legal codes etc., is manusmriti. In it chapters No.VII and IX, deal with the forts as an essential requisite for a king.
