"The literary evidence, thus, shows clearly that in the period of Brāhmaṇas, Pāṇini and Kauṭilya (C.1000 to 3rd century B.C.), urban life was fully developed in the Gangetic valley and cities with elaborate arrangements for defence had come into existence. The excavations substantiate the literary evidence described above."
