The *Goths*, unable to resist the torrent, were compelled to abandon their settlements, and to seek for refuge within the Roman empire. They crossed the Danube in such numbers, that the Roman provinces were soon overrun by these barbarians. The emperor Valens, who then reigned in the East, was at first disposed to treat them with kindness, and to allow them to settle in Thrace. But the avarice and cruelty of the Roman governors soon provoked them to revolt. They took up arms, and defeated the Roman armies in several engagements. Valens himself was slain in the battle of Hadrianople, and his army was almost entirely destroyed.
