How far this creative bodily unity of space and volume, both suffused with light and darkness, may lead, the interior of a cave in Aurangābād (cave iii) shows.¹³⁷ There human worshipping figures, fully carved in the round, squat in the interior of the cave, which is transformed into a rich and luminously dark body, into which the devotee who enters the cave becomes absorbed. This intimacy of the object of devotion and concentration, the stone effigies of worshippers, and the living bodies of those who may enter, is the widest possible application to which the plastic conception of volume lends itself with the help of modelling and of light and darkness.
