Altogether the paintings in Ajaṇṭā are more closely related to Veṅgī reliefs than to the contemporary rock-cut reliefs in Ajaṇṭā itself. But this does not refer to most of the representations of the Buddha; these are of the same type in the reliefs and wall paintings.
