v1.c5.s1.7

⁵ The rules and meaning of the Agni and the Vedi are given in the Brāhmaṇas (c. 2000 B.C.). They form part of the Karmavidhi, the rules for the performance of the sacrificial rites. The Śrauta-Sūtras (2000-1500 B.C.) contain the rules for the rites ordained by the Veda. Each Śrauta-Sūtra seems to have had its Sulva-Sūtra, or section dealing with the measurements and the ‘geometry’ of the altar.—The Vedi is the sacred ground measured out for the sacrifices (yajña); RV. VIII. 19. 18. In the ‘Śatapatha-Brāhmaṇa’, VII. I. I. 37; VII. 2. 2. ff. are explicit descriptions of the Gārhapatya and Āhavanīya hearths.
