The very imperfection which is the cause of the existence of the world serves as the basis of all astrological forecasts and astronomical calculations. There is always a remainder. For nothing could continue if nothing were to remain. The place occupied by anything in the present, is in the residue of the past. The name of Vāstu, derived from Vastu, ‘a really existing thing’, signifies residence as well as residue (Ś.B. I. 7. 3. 18-19).
