¹⁰⁹ Cf. also the lotus of Ākāśa with its thirty-two petals. Mus, 'Barabuḍur', op. cit., p. 701 f. The symbols of Śrīkṣetra, Ayodhyā, and the Vāstupuruṣamaṇḍala are plans in which inanifestation is laid out, with reference to the Principle beyond it, and in its centre. ¹¹⁰ 'Mayamata', VII. 49; 'Bṛhatsaṃhitā', LII. 51. ¹¹¹ The majority of texts place the Vāstupuruṣa with the head in the north-east; 'Bṛhatsaṃhitā', LII. 51; 'Matsyapurāṇa'; 'Vaikhānāsāgama'; 'Kāmikāgama'; 'Mayamata'; 'Īśānaśivagurudevapaddhati', 'Hayaśīrṣapañcarātra'; 'Samarāṅgaṇasūtradhāra'; 'Kāśyapaśilpa', 'Manuṣyālayacandrikā', II. 28; etc. (see notes 45, 46). In some of them, the alternative position, with the head in the east is described in detail ('Mayamata', 'Śilparatna') and quoted as the opinion "held by others". In other texts, the two possibilities are not kept apart; they are combined in the 'Vāsturājavallabha', II. 1-2, where the Vāstupuruṣa is described as placed by the gods on the ground with his face east. The feet should be worshipped in the south-west; the head in the north-east; cf. also 'Mānasāra', VII. 255.
