v2.c12.19
The Lion is a Devourer (grāsa); it is shown here with the whole face (akṣatamukha; S.S. LVII. 643), including the lower jaw, which however is broken off. Similar images may be discerned in a corner of the terrace and on the ridge of the Śukanāsā (Pl. I). The Chinthe, at the entrance to every Pagoda, is the Burmese equivalent of the Lion. It wards off all that is evil.
