Neither the temples in existence nor the groups of 20, 45 or 64 varieties of Nāgara and other temples, and of 96 Drāviḍa temples of which Vāstuvidyā treats consistently, represent all the varieties of the Hindu temple. Those preceding the beginning of the present era and the many which must have been erected in the first centuries of the first millennium, are known to some extent from their representation in—Buddhist—reliefs, etc.
