In the companion piece depicting the ‘Seven Steps’ the infant Buddha stands under the royal umbrella in the centre, and behind him is an attendant holding the umbrella shaft with his left hand and a fly-whisk in his right. On the infant’s left is Indra, recognizable by his head-dress and thunderbolt (vajra), and on his right, Brahmā, with the Brāhman’s kamaṇḍalu in his left hand. Behind the two gods were six other heavenly beings, three on one side and three on the other.
