**Battle-axe :** The battle-axe was in India, as much as in ancient Europe, a dreadful weapon of destruction, and various forms of it may be seen at Sāñci, Amarāvati and Bhuvaneśvara. Illustrations Nos. 188, 189, 191 and 192 represent some of the commonest kind, and a very elaborate one is shewn in Illustration No. 187, taken from the hand of a statue of Gaṇeśa in the Great Tower.
