v1.c10.454
Of the particular brood of horses the Hindus used before the Christian era, we possess very little information. The Vedas praise highly a species called *Nayut*. Subsequently the most noted and highly prized was a Central Asian race called Bāhlīka or of Balkh.²²⁹ Guzerat, Beluchistan, Kāmboja,²³⁰ (ancient Cabul) and Persia, also yielded many hardy animals, which were generally esteemed by the heroes of the great war of the *Mahābhārata*. Of their likeness, however, we have no remains in stone. The horses figured at Sāñci, Amarāvatī and Bhuvaneśvara are so much alike, that it is impossible to decide upon their caste.
