² Mr. Fergusson spells the word "Amrāvatī", lit., having mangoe trees; but, as he admits that it is derived from Amareśvara, the lord, *īśvara*, of the immortals, *amara*, the correct orthography should be as given above. To avoid a discussion for which I have no space here, I have accepted Mr. Fergusson's dates of Sāñcī and Amarāvatī; but there are reasons to believe that the principal topes of those places date from a much earlier period.
