v1.c6.38

Arrian’s *Periplus of the Erythrean Sea* does not extend to beyond Cape Comorin, but in the Sequel to it, there is an account given of the navigation of the Bay of Bengal along the coast to Arracan. No mention is made in it of Utkala, Kaliṅga or Oḍra-deśa. It is said, however, that proceeding “from Masalia”, modern Masulipatam, where a great quantity of the finest muslin is prepared, “the course lies eastward, across a bay, to Desarene where the ivory is procured of that species called *bosare*”, and then passing in a northerly direction by the country of a number of barbarous tribes “the course turns again east, and sailing with the coast on the left, and the sea on the right, you arrive at the Ganges and the extremity of the continent towards the east called *khruse*” [or the Golden Chersonese].²⁸
