⁹ The Cāturmāsya Yāga of the Hindus and the Vasso of the Buddhists owe their origin entirely to this cause. Travelling during the monsoon rain being impracticable, the monks and hermits were allowed to dwell in houses, and there keep themselves occupied with some ceremonial or other by way of discipline.
