¹⁴ Aśoka is said to have built 84,000 *stūpas* in different parts of India. This is no doubt an exaggeration, but there can be no question that he erected a great many, for a good number of them were in existence in the time of Fā Hian and Hiouen Thsang from 7 to 9 centuries after his time.
