v1.c7.333

²⁰ *Mahābhārata*, B. II. C. 34, As. Soc. Ed. I, p. 354. This passage appears in Mr. Wheeler's *History of India*, (Vol. I. p. 165), in a very different garb, quite unlike what we meet with in the original. The word *āvasatha* "a house," is rendered by "a pavilion", which conveys the idea of a tent, or a temporary structure, and makes the whole description inconsistent, and at times absurd. In fact his extracts are generally taken from corrupt translations, and are not at all reliable. For purposes of critical enquiry they are utterly worthless. Vide *Proceedings*, Asiatic Society, Bengal, for 1868, p. 44.
