The arguments on which the Bacchic theory of the distinguished antiquarians is founded, are:—1st, the general excellence of the sculpture; 2nd; the character of the principal figure; 3rd, the dresses of two of the male figures; 4th, ditto of [70] the females; 5th, the vine-leaf crowns; 6th, the foreign character of the *tazza*. None of these arguments, however, is such as to leave no room for doubt, and people in this country may well question their accuracy.
