The lack of information to which reference has been made in the above extracts will account for the many serious errors and mis-statements, such as the absence of insulated statues and of simple representations of actual life, the relative dreaminess of Buddhism and Hinduism &c., which disfigure them; and it is unnecessary to refute them in detail. But the general principle on which their main argument is based, is so obviously and so entirely fallacious, that I cannot help expressing my wonder that a professor, historian and art-critic of Dr. Lübke’s standing and reputation, should have so readily adopted it.
