v2.c17.27

According to General Cunningham “the ancient metropolis of the country was Kaṭak on the Mahānadi river,” whence it was removed by Yajāti Keśarī to Yajātipur in the early part of the sixth century, and Bhuvaneśvara was founded by Lalāṭendra Keśarī.¹³ There is nothing, however, to show that Kaṭak was the ancient capital, or that Bhuvaneśvara was founded by Lalāṭendra Keśarī. On the contrary, the Temple Records distinctly state that Kaṭak, the oldest of the three towns which have borne that name was founded by Nṛpati Keśarī in 940, nearly three centuries after the death of Lalāṭendra, and as the Records in question for that period are authentic and most probably contemporary, there is no reason to doubt them; and I shall presently show on evidence which I think is quite unimpeachable that Bhuvaneśvara existed many centuries before the age of that king.
