In the accompanying plan of an ideal Viṣṇu temple, the letters N, E, S, and W stand for north, east, south and west respectively, the directions which the images are required to face. In the case of those images where nothing is mentioned about the directions which they should face, they are shown tentatively by the same letters, but enclosed in square brackets.
