the *Gesta* of the bishops of Auxerre, written in the ninth century, tells us that Bishop Heribald (829–857) was a man of great learning and piety, but that he was also a man of great simplicity. He was, we are told, a man who was easily deceived, and who was often taken advantage of by those around him. This, however, did not prevent him from being a man of great influence, and his episcopate was marked by a number of important events.
