It may be noted at the very outset that according to Varāhamihira’s dictum “देशानुरूपभूषणवेषालङ्कारमूर्तिभिः कार्या” the varieties of drapery and decorations were largely dependent upon local influences. Besdies we have another dictum of Bharatamuni (cf. Nāṭyaśāstra) :
