The British Museum possesses about forty such detached heads, mostly from the Peshāwar District, purchased in 1861, fifteen of which have been published by Dr. Burgess. Two of those are here reproduced (Figs. 55 and 56). Terra-cotta heads, more or less similar in character, but not quite so well executed, were found in excavations at Saheṭh-Maheṭh in Oudh, supposed to be the site of Srāvasti.² The late Dr. Leitner pointed out the resemblance between these Indian heads and those from Cyprus to be seen in various museums.
