¹ Laurence Binyon, *Painting in the Far East* (1908), pp. 35, 50. See also the same author’s article, ‘A Chinese Painting of the Fourth Century’ in *Burlington Magazine*, Jan., 1904, p. 44. One Japanese work, the fresco in the temple of Hōriūji, which was repaired or built between A. D. 708 and 715, is quite Indian in character, and ‘there seems no doubt that it is modelled upon the Ajanṭā frescoes’ (*Painting in the Far East*, p. 87). Anderson gives the date as 607, but other critics date it a century later.
