³ Sīgiriya; also written Sīgiri, Seygiri, Hīgiri, Sīgiri-gala, Sīgiri-nuwara, and, in inscriptions, Sīhigiri. The name, in all its forms, means ‘Lion-hill’, with reference to the passage connecting the galleries, which was wrought in the shape of a gigantic lion. The hill stands in the Inamaluwa Koralē of the Mātalē District, Central Province, about twenty miles almost due west from the mediaeval capital, Polonnāruwa.
