The fact that a notable school of painting existed in Southern Rājputāna during the seventh century may have some bearing on the problem of the development of the art at Ajaṇṭā and Bāgh. Of course, painting must have been known in Rājputāna long before Sringadhara introduced an improved style. In his time the ruling clans were of foreign, Central Asian descent, and it may well be that his improvements were based on elements derived from Transoxiana or Western Turkistan. But all such speculations lack a basis of definite evidence, and must remain bare possibilities.
