The former copies of the frescoes hardly prepare one at all for the extraordinary beauty both of drawing and of colouring. Texture means so much; and here there is a sensitiveness—consider, for instance, the drawing of the Bodhisattva’s lifted hand holding the water-lily—which the most skilful copyist could never hope to render.
