which, as Lüders points out, is an error for ‘Maitrībalarājā’, ‘King Maitrībala’ the hero of the *Jātaka*. The intrusion of the *akṣara* *rka* is the writer’s error, and he clearly writes *Chai* for *Mai* in the initial syllable. There is no reason to doubt that the scene represented was the testing of the kindheartedness of Maitrībala. The story is not found in the Pāli *Jātaka*.
