¹ Some scholars have suggested that the story as painted at Ajanta differs in its concluding part from the Jātaka version. Subhaddā did not die but only fainted, and as a recompense for her cruel act she ordered the building of a chaitya and a stūpa, the latter over the dead body of the royal elephant. The procession, according to this interpretation, shows the rājā and the rānī going to the stūpa to pay their respects to the last remains of the Bodhisattva.
