v4.c15.44

author writes that his work is based on older treatises, which were probably compiled during the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., when the art of Ajanta was at its zenith.¹ The technical details given in the *Viṣṇudharmottara* regarding the preparation of the surface before the laying on of the colours are identical with those to be seen at Ajanta; even the ingredients of the *rinzaffo* (clay-plaster) are the same as those found by chemical analysis of the clay-plaster of the Ajanta paintings.²
