c14.2

As contrasted with the scanty silver coinage of Chandragupta II, the silver coinage of his son Kumāragupta I is copious, and we can notice several classes and varieties in it. It was no longer confined to the western provinces of the empire. The convenience of having small currency in silver, which would serve as the stepping stone between the insignificant cowries on one side and the costly gold coins on the other, was realised, and the Gupta administration took steps to issue silver coins for use in the Gangetic plain also.
