We are not yet able to explain why the weight standard of the gold currency should be gradually increasing from reign to reign in the above fashion. It is possible to agrue that gold was becoming cheaper in terms of silver, and hence the state felt compelled to give a progressively bigger gold coin to its subjects. There is, however, no evidence to show that gold was thus actually getting cheaper; it may be also doubted whether the gold currency was so accurately adjusted to the prices of silver in ancient times.
