¹ The Allahabad inscription describes how the charters of Samudragupta used to be stamped with the Garuḍa seal. We cannot therefore accept the opinion of Smith that the Garuḍa standard was copied on the Gupta coins from the Roman eagle. The Garuḍa standard was well known in India even in the 2nd century B. C., as is shown by the Besnagar pillar of Heliodorus.
