That the Brāhmī lipi was in the third century an ancient alphabet with a long history is proved by the very considerable variations in the forms of its signs found in the several versions of the Edicts, as well as by the recent discovery, on Sir A. Cunningham’s Eraṇ coin, of a variety which runs from the right to the left, and of another one, on the Bhaṭṭiprolu relic caskets, which includes a number of more archaic forms and independent developments.
